About the event
You have recording equipment, a voice, and an understanding of the very basics of voice acting. You’re almost ready to get out there and start making your way in the voice acting world! But first, you need a professional demo reel. This workshop will help you develop 12 distinct voices, and then help you compile them into a professional job ready character demo reel.
Included in this workshop, you will receive:
- Access to the What A Director Wants lectures
- Four rounds of critique for your demo reel
- Live workshops discussing vocal distinction, until you have 12 characters you can pull from at any time. Includes some basic accent work.
- One-on-one guidance from the director
- Audio editing assistance for the production of the demo reel
- Personalized recommendation letter written by Amelia to be used for future auditions/casting calls.
- Will graduate the class with a ready-to-go professional demo reel!
This workshop consists of 7 meetings.
Meeting #1 will cover: What role types am I interested in? What kind of voices can I make? What makes a voice unique and recognizable? By the end of this class you will have 12 character concepts to voice.
Meeting #2: How does writing impact character voices? What clues can we take from the script? What character traits control how we bring a character to life? By the end of this session, you will learn basic vocal warm ups, three exercises to help you develop a better ear for voices, and will have written and workshopped demo lines for each of your 12 character voices. For homework, you will do your first recording of these voices.
Meeting #3 - #5: The recordings for your various character voices will be workshopped with the director as well as fellow actors, until each voice is distinct enough to be recognizable on it’s own merit. Each round of critique will include focus on what makes each character voice distinct, when it’s easy to tell voices apart, when it isn’t, and in what order the voices should appear on demo reels.
Meeting #6: This will be a one-on-one meeting with the director to go over your reel in detail for the last round of edits. After this, the final version of the demo reel should be ready for production. (NOTE: If you do not have the audio-editing software to clean up background noise, you can send it in to us and we will do it for you, free of charge!)
Meeting #7: The final demo reels will be presented to the whole class! We will take time to discuss each person’s demo reel, what stands out the most and why. Then we will discuss what’s changed since the first demo reel, what you can hear now that you didn’t notice before, and how this impacts your acting.
